National Air Photo Library (NAPL) On-Line
Application
Client: Centre
for Topographic Information, Natural Resources
Canada
Project URL: National
Air Photo Library
Description:
The National Air Photo Library (NAPL), part
of the Centre for Topographic Information
(CTI) and located in Ottawa, has over six
million aerial photographs covering all of
Canada, some dating as far back as the 1920s.
The National Air Photo Library functions as
an archive, a record centre and an order office
for photographs of Canada. NAPL was using
a manual process for searching for photographs
for companies, governments and individuals.
This manual method was time consuming, inefficient
and required extensive resources and maintenance,
so CTI sought the development and implementation
of a Web-based application for searching,
visualizing and retrieving data from the NAPL
database. The system was required to: be compliant
with the Web Map Services (WMS) standards
established by the Open GIS Consortium (OGC);
use the existing photo metadata organized
according to the Federal Geographic Data Committee
(FGDC) standards; and, provide customized
connectivity between the NAPL Oracle metadata
database and the GeoConnections Discovery
Portal.
Compusult provided components of its Web
Enterprise Suite software, data services and
professional services to migrate the manual
process to a Web-based automated environment.
A primary focus of the application was incorporating
the standards that are currently in use and
endorsed by the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure
(CGDI) and GeoConnections discovery portals.
The following Web Enterprise Suite components
were provided:
- Percipio
- Percipio is a commercial data warehouse
product especially suited to the needs of
organizations for receiving, archiving,
cataloguing, maintaining and disseminating
data holdings over intranets and wide area
networks such as the Internet.
- PHTML
- PHTML (Parsed HTML) is a development and
applications environment that provides Web
content managers and developers with the
ability to create, integrate and dynamically
update Web-pages with content from Relational
Database Management Systems (RDBMSs), customer
back-end systems and external applications
such as e-commerce.
- Meta
Manager - Meta Manager is a metadata
toolkit that enables data providers to expose
data collections and archives as Z39.50
- compliant servers and/or as OGC-compliant
Web Feature Servers. Meta Manager will be
used to connect CTI collections to the GeoConnections
Discovery Portal.
- Map
Manager - Map Manager is a powerful
OGC-compliant Internet mapping solution
that provides organizations and agencies
with the ability to present, link, distribute
and publish geomatics-based data, products
and services. Map Manager provides the infrastructure
for users to access spatial information
from disparate data sources and to display
the information in powerful, easy-to-use
WWW browser client applications. Map Manager
uses a multi-tier architecture with options
for deploying clients, servers, administrative
and third-party interfaces and extensively
uses XML technologies for client and server
communications.
- Language
Manager - Language Manager provides
administrators with the ability to configure,
manage and deploy multi-lingual versions
of a Web Enterprise Suite Web site. Translators
can use the Language Manager translation
facility to translate and store Web site
content. Language translations entered by
translators are maintained in a relational
database. When Web site translations are
completed, the Language Manager administrative
interface generates a translated Web tree
providing Web users with the ability to
select the language of preference.
